Security Service Investigates Kyiv Monastery Over Unlicensed Pro-Russian School

by Vivian Berggren

Ukraine’s domestic security service has launched an investigation into whether a monastery complex in Kyiv has been operating an unlicensed school promoting pro-Russian ideology.

The investigation centers on the Holosiiv Pustyn monastery, where authorities suspect an illegal educational institution has been operating. The security service said the alleged school may have been providing instruction aligned with Russian state narratives rather than Ukraine’s official curriculum.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about Russian influence within religious institutions in Ukraine, particularly those with historical ties to the Moscow Patriarchate. Since the full-scale invasion, Ukrainian authorities have intensified scrutiny of organizations suspected of maintaining loyalty to Moscow.

The Security Service stated it is investigating whether the unlicensed school violated Ukrainian laws governing education and national security. The monastery complex is one of several religious sites where authorities have investigated suspected pro-Russian activities since the 2022 invasion.
