Ukrainian authorities have charged a Russian prison doctor in absentia with war crimes, accusing him of torturing Ukrainian prisoners of war held in Russian custody.
Ilya Sorokin, a doctor at a Russian prison facility, was charged by the Security Service of Ukraine and the Prosecutor General’s Office following investigations into the treatment of Ukrainian POWs. The charges allege that Sorokin subjected captive Ukrainian soldiers to cruel and degrading treatment that amounts to war crimes under international law.
The case is part of a broader effort by Ukrainian authorities to document and prosecute crimes committed against Ukrainian prisoners of war, which they say have been systematic and widespread. Investigators have collected testimony from former prisoners who described harrowing conditions and deliberate mistreatment in Russian detention facilities.
Ukrainian officials said the investigation into Sorokin’s activities is ongoing and that they are working with international partners to build cases against other individuals involved in the mistreatment of POWs. The charges were filed in absentia as Sorokin remains in Russian-controlled territory.
