Ukraine Jails Former Deputy Prime Minister in Energoatom Kickback Case

Ukraine’s High Anti-Corruption Court has ordered the pretrial detention of former Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov in connection with the sprawling Operation Midas kickback investigation centered on the state nuclear power company.

The court’s ruling on November 18 marked one of the highest-profile detentions in the probe, which has already ensnared multiple current and former senior officials. Chernyshov is accused of involvement in a scheme that allegedly siphoned millions of dollars from Energoatom through a network of shell companies and intermediaries.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Chernyshov played a coordinating role in the alleged kickback network, using his position to facilitate payments and shield the operation from scrutiny. The former deputy prime minister has denied the allegations, with his legal team preparing an appeal against the detention order.

The case has become a cornerstone of Ukraine’s anti-corruption drive, demonstrating the government’s willingness to prosecute senior political figures. The investigation has been closely monitored by international partners as a test of Ukraine’s judicial independence and commitment to rule of law reforms.
