A federal judge has officially dismissed the corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, while simultaneously rejecting the Justice Department’s request to keep the door open for future charges. The ruling, issued on Wednesday, effectively closes the legal chapter that has overshadowed the mayor’s administration.
Adams faced serious allegations last year, including bribery and violations of campaign finance laws. Following his indictment, the mayor shifted his political stance, aligning with the policies of the Trump administration. This move sparked widespread speculation that the Justice Department’s decision to drop the case was linked to his support for federal immigration enforcement measures in the city.
Prosecutors had argued for a dismissal without prejudice, allowing them to revisit the charges later. They maintained that proceeding with the case would hinder Adams’ ability to perform his duties and jeopardize national immigration objectives. However, U.S. District Judge Dale Ho rejected this logic, stating that such a conditional dismissal would inevitably foster a public belief that the mayor’s freedom hinged on his compliance with federal immigration priorities.
“This would create an unavoidable perception that the mayor’s liberty is tied to his willingness to enforce the administration’s immigration agenda, potentially making him more accountable to Washington than to the citizens of New York,” Judge Ho wrote in his decision.
Despite the legal victory, Adams faces an uncertain political future. Recent polling indicates his approval rating has plummeted to just 20%, placing him behind other potential candidates, including former Governor Andrew Cuomo. While the mayor insists that voters will rally behind him now that the charges are dropped, his deepening ties to an unpopular president in New York City could prove to be a significant liability in the upcoming election.
Adams has consistently maintained that the original charges were politically motivated under the previous administration. Following the change in federal leadership, he publicly endorsed the deportation of undocumented migrants, a move that has further polarized his base. Governor Kathy Hochul has so far refrained from calling for his resignation, despite mounting pressure from political opponents.
