International Sting Takes Down Multi-Million Euro Investment Scam

A coordinated law enforcement sweep has crushed a criminal syndicate that swindled over a hundred victims out of roughly 3 million euros through a sham online investment scheme, officials confirmed Tuesday.

German prosecutors spearheaded the operation, with backing from Europol and Eurojust, leading to simultaneous raids in Albania, Cyprus, and Israel. One suspect was taken into custody in Cyprus, with legal steps underway to extradite them to Germany.

The outfit allegedly ran a bogus trading platform designed to entice victims with offers of hefty returns. Initially, small deposits were accepted, then victims were pressured to sink larger sums into what appeared to be a lucrative venture. Fake screens displayed manipulated profits, while con artists posing as brokers deployed psychological tricks to fleece significant amounts. The cash was never invested; instead, it was pocketed by the gang.

The probe kicked off in Germany after a couple reported being duped. A deeper investigation uncovered a sprawling network stretching across numerous nations. A preliminary crackdown in September 2022 netted arrests in Belgium and Latvia and yielded crucial evidence that fingered additional suspects, including call center managers.

On May 13, a second wave of law enforcement action unfolded, featuring eight searches in Albania, Cyprus, and Israel. Authorities confiscated electronic gear, documents, and cash to advance the case.

Eurojust facilitated legal coordination across borders to ensure seamless judicial alignment, while Europol supplied operational aid, including real-time intelligence sharing via a virtual command post. The inquiry remains open, with further moves anticipated.
